Sculpture As Verb expands on the ideas proposed by one of Richard Serra’s most influential works, Verb List (1967). This early artwork by Serra, a sculptor known for working with large-scale assemblies of sheet metal, is a text drawing of 84 verbs that evoke the performative, exploratory, and action-driven processes inherent to making art. The artists participating in Sculpture As Verb each have different relationships with the list and art-making; some use it as a prompt to question their own practices and some take the opportunity to challenge traditional sculptural methods. The selection of works emphasizes how language can inspire new visual and spatial forms. Similar to the premise of Verb List, each artwork, in its own way, questions the common tendency to treat sculpture as a static form.
